Community Involvement
Road to College: Encouragement and Discovery Program This program was created by Naomi Amparo, and Daniel Anaya one year ago. We went to local high schools to encourage and persuade low income minority student to pursue a higher education. Our mission is simple, to get at least one of those students into college.
What is going on this semester? The program this semester will be divided into two parts. One 2 session program and one 4 session program.
The 4 Session Program- This session will be at North High School. The students in this session will be composed of high school Freshman. Six classes will be covered in each of the 4 sessions.
**You do not have to stay in for the whole day, if you would just like to participate in a certain amount of classes or for part of the day, that will be fine as well. **If you are unable to attend any of the session, you can still help us by becoming a mentor or helping to do student profiles (matching each students interest with different majors offered).
Training? You will not be required to be trained prior to any of the sessions. If you have the desire to help others, that will be enough. This program is also design to help you with your speaking abilities. If you have a problem speaking out in public, this program will help you with that. We do not put a volunteer on the spot, once you feel comfortable; we will let you lead the class. Feel free to attend any of the sessions to see how we implement this program.
Transportation? Transportation will be available. If you need us to provide transportation for you at any of the sessions, please feel free to contact us. We depart from ASU, and return to ASU after the sessions are over. If you plan to use your own transportation method, please let us know that you will be attending so that we can keep track of how many people will be showing up to the sessions. Who do I contact to get involved? Please send an email to Cody Hittinger at chitting@asu.edu or to asucollege101@yahoo.com with your questions. |
